5 tips for training your newly remote team

Gone are the days when training happens once a quarter. Old ways of thinking of training as an event are changing to thoughts of continuous learning, with an ever increasing demand for new skills in the workplace.

And that’s easier when you’re all in one place, right? Creating a culture of learning when your team’s remote can seem quite daunting, but it doesn’t have to be a difficult thing. So here’s some tips for helping to keep your team up-to-speed.

1. Create a one-stop-shop for learning

You need to make learning easy, and that starts with finding it. Help your team know where to go by keeping it all in one place.

3. Rethink your content strategy

Now more than ever we need to rethink how we approach learning, and that starts with your content strategy. Take a step back to plan out content at a high level, before drilling down into the specific resources you’re going to create, curate or purchase. 

1 in 3 say uninspiring content is a barrier to their learning. 24 per cent higher profit margins can be the result of companies who invest in training.

There are tons of off-the-shelf content providers for you to leverage, as well as a whole bunch of content available on the web to curate – videos, blogs, articles. Plus, you probably have great resources already available from your organisation.

Platform functionality like pathways lets you create learner journeys tailored to your teams. This includes sharing pre and/or post work for any online training sessions you’re running.

4. Make it interactive

Passive learning experiences just don’t work. When it comes to digital learning, mix up the formats a little to give variety and stop it feeling too repetitive. When running online sessions, make it practical and engage attendees – give tasks and ask them to share their results, run short quizzes to keep them on their toes.

And try to keep them engaged. Social features like comments and forums encourage people to share experiences and how they’ve practically applied what they’ve learned in their day-to-day roles.

5. Give them a chance to shine

Remember, it’s not all down to you. Why not let a team member take the lead and host a session to share some of their specialist knowledge or something they’ve just discovered.

74 per cent feel they aren't achieving their full potential due to a lack of training. 76 per cent of employees are looking for career growth opportunities.

Equally, there’s a shift towards self-directed learning. So create an environment where they can easily find the resources they need, and let them lead their own development and broaden their skill set.
