What is compliance training?
Compliance training definition
Compliance training is the mandatory training organisations give employees so they understand and follow the laws, regulations and internal policies that apply to their role. It covers topics like health and safety, data protection, anti-bribery, safeguarding and conduct, and is usually repeated on a set schedule so knowledge stays current.
Done well, compliance training does more than tick a box. It reduces risk, protects people and gives the organisation evidence that it meets its legal obligations.
Compliance training example
"Harbour Foods" runs 40 sites with 2,000 frontline staff. Every employee must complete food safety, health and safety and data protection training each year, and managers must also complete anti-bribery training.
Instead of chasing completions by email, the L&D team uses a compliance training platform to assign each course automatically by role and site. Reminders go out before deadlines, refresher training is reassigned before certificates expire and managers can see overdue training across their team. When an auditor visits, the team exports a report showing who has completed what, and when.
Compliance training FAQs
What are examples of compliance training?
Common examples include health and safety, data protection and GDPR, anti-bribery and corruption, anti-harassment, information security, safeguarding, equality and diversity, and industry-specific regulations such as financial conduct rules.
Is compliance training mandatory?
Much of it is. Health and safety and data protection training are often required by law, and regulated industries such as financial services and healthcare set their own mandatory training rules. Other compliance training is required by internal policy rather than law.
How often should compliance training be done?
Most organisations refresh compliance training annually, but it depends on the topic and regulator. Some certifications expire every two or three years, while policy updates may need new training straight away.
How do you track compliance training?
Most organisations use a learning management system to assign courses, send reminders and record completions. A compliance training LMS adds certification tracking and audit-ready reporting, so you can prove completion to regulators at any time.
