Nobody’s reading internal comms any more. Here’s how to fix it.

Your people are tired of screens. Here's why audio gets your message heard, and how to offer it without starting a podcast.

Here’s an uncomfortable truth about internal communications: almost nobody is reading them.

You aren’t reading that 10-page L&D compliance module, and neither are your product managers, or the sales lead who swore they’d “catch up on the company newsletter this weekend.”

It’s an awkward thing to admit, especially if you’ve spent your days writing this stuff. Or in our case, building the platform that hosts it.

We see the analytics. We see the drop-offs, the skimming, the 10-second average time spent on a 5-minute read. But it’s not that your employees are lazy, or don’t care about the Q3 strategy.

It’s that they are completely and hopelessly burnt out on screens.

When someone has been staring  at a monitor for 8 hours straight, reading notification after notification, a 1,500-word company update just looks like more work. It cannot compete for their depleted visual attention. So they bookmark it for ‘later’, and later never comes.

‍

The great spoken-word shift

If you want to know how your people actually want to consume information, look at what they do the moment they step outside: they put their headphones in.

In their personal lives, your team has already solved the screen fatigue problem. They’ve shifted to audio. Podcasting is an absolute juggernaut. As of 2026, there are over 584 million global podcast listeners. In the U.S. alone, 55% of the population listens monthly. Among 13-34 year-olds, spoken-word audio consumption has doubled over the past decade, officially blowing past traditional AM/FM radio.

Audio works because it doesn’t demand your eyes. Over 83% of podcast listening happens on mobile devices. It is deskless by design.

And employees want to bring that habit to work. Research shows that 79% of employees feel that listening to audio while working actually boosts their productivity and helps them focus. They expect the same consumer-grade flexibility from their employer that they get from Spotify. They want to listen to the CEO’s update while walking the dog, commuting, or doing the dishes.

‍

The accessibility case for audio content

Beyond just convenience, text-heavy cultures are inherently exclusive.

When you only offer written communication, you are building an intranet optimised for neurotypical, native speakers who happen to learn best by reading. So offering audio is more than a fun perk;  it’s an accessibility requirement.

Audio read-throughs actively support neurodivergent employees (like those with ADHD or dyslexia), auditory learners, and non-native speakers who often comprehend spoken language far better than written text. A modern workplace should be inclusive by design, and that means giving people a choice in how they learn and consume culture.

‍

The obvious solution (and why it fails)

So, the fix is obvious: start an internal podcast.

Except anyone who has ever tried to run an internal podcast knows it is a massive headache. You need a quiet room, expensive microphones, editing software, and hours of time you don't have. You end up chasing engineers and leaders for interviews until the project loses steam three episodes in.

We knew our customers desperately wanted to offer audio, but the traditional workflow was entirely too heavy. We realised we didn't need to turn HR and Comms teams into NPR producers. We just needed to automate the heavy lifting.

Press play on productivity with Thrive

‍

That’s why we built our new click-to-listen feature directly into Thrive.

Instead of setting up a studio, you just do what you already do: write the memo. Post the update. Publish the learning module.

Thrive does the rest. With a single click, any long-form text on the platform is instantly transformed into a high-quality, listenable 1-person or 2-person podcast or voice read-through.

It requires zero effort from the admin, zero microphone time, and zero editing.

Employees can hit play on their phones, put their headphones in, and listen to the new L&D module while they walk to get a coffee or commute home. We wanted to democratise audio creation so that you never have to force a tired employee to read another wall of text. They get the context they need, in the format they prefer, and you get your engagement metrics back.

We said earlier that nobody is reading internal comms anymore. Well, now they don't have to. Let them listen instead.
